Being VS. Doing – Product Ownership
  • Focus on being a Product Owner and the Doing will be easier

We often talk about what the Product Owner Must “DO” – they must own the Product Backlog, they must manage the product backlog and the priorities, they must refine the backlog, they must answer the team’s questions. Let’s focus on what a Product Owner must BE? What are some traits that will help us become effective PO’s?

Based on these traits we will work through how to rate yourself or your Product Owners on each trait. We will see where your PO’s need to focus on to become more effective. We will review what a Product Owner does? What is your PO doing now? How can our PO’s be more effective in creating value in the product, in engaging with customers and stakeholders and in working with the Scrum Teams. We will wrap the talk with a conversation to address questions around the role of the PO.

  • Identify what is a Product Owner
  • Understand the 6 basic traits of an effective Product Owner
  • Learn how to use these 6 traits to assess the effectiveness of your Product Owner
  • Use these traits to improve Product Owner interactions
  • Document the things a Product Owner must DO
  • Take Away Action Items

Outcomes Before Features – The Science of Defining & Measuring Customer Value

We talk a lot about maximizing value for customers. But, ask someone exactly what value is….and you will often come up empty. Or abstract platitudes, like, “Faster, cheaper, easier.” Or worse, things that have nothing to do with customer value, such as “Number of subscribers, conversion rate, ROI.” These metrics are business value, not customer value.

In this session, we will explore an underutilized and very practical technique from Jobs To Be Done theory, called Customer Outcome Mapping. You will learn practical ways to discover, define, measure, and validate value. Giving you the data so you can ruthlessly prioritize, spend less time pivoting, and deliver more of what actually matters.

About John

“Sanity Before Agility” is John Miller’s mantra as a product and organizational coach. John has been a Product Owner for many years with the scars to prove it. Which has led him to provide practical yet enlightening advice and coaching to hundreds of Product Owners and teams, from big tech to nonprofits. Join John to cure the insanity and make work sane, safe, and successful.

Scaling the Product Owner Role with the 5Ts

Typical patterns of scaling Product Ownership, regardless of your scaling framework

With all the different scaling options that exist today, it may seem like there is very little agreement on how to scale the Product Owner role. Ralph, co-author of the best selling The Professional Product Owner book, will introduce five Product Owner Delegation Models that can guide you regardless of what scaling framework may be in place. Depending on your context, they can be implemented individually or combined. You will leave with a better understanding of the role of Product Owner and what their true focus should be, especially at scale. You will also leave with a way to map each model to your existing structure. This session takes a scaling framework agnostic approach to the Product Owner role. This is done by introducing Five Ts Delegation Models (5Ts).

Product Discovery. What is it all about?

I’ll show you how to identify opportunities and test ideas before they are selected for the Sprint.

Learning by delivering is expensive. According to Marty Cagan, most of the ideas are not going to work. Those which work typically require several iterations before they deliver the expected outcomes. I’ll show you: – What are the best ways to identify new opportunities? – Why shouldn’t you let your customers design solutions? – What do customers really care about? – The best way to minimize risk and eliminate waste. My presentation is inspired by the authors like Marty Cagan, Teresa Torres, Eric Ries, Melisa Perri, Dan Olsen and others.

Every week I talk to dozens of professionals. I see many unsolved problems almost everywhere. Companies do not want to empower their teams, leaders don’t understand empiricism, product discovery is neglected, departments dig into silos, and feature factories are a real epidemic. I have found myself in such a situation many times. I decided to change it. Since 2014, I have been helping organizations build great products and strong product teams. My free content has helped hundreds of aspiring PMs progress in their careers. I’m also one of the 300 PSPO III worldwide (the highest Scrum.org certification).
